Public Portal
A public portal on a government website is a centralized, secure digital gateway that allows residents, businesses, and visitors to interact directly with government services and data through a single interface. Unlike a standard webpage that only displays text or media, a public portal is built for two-way interaction, self-service tasks, and personalized access. Key capabilities of a public portal usually include: transactional services, such as paying bills or applying for permits; personalized accounts, sometimes accessed with a single sign-on (SSO) password; access to public information, such as city council agendas or meeting minutes; and records request processing systems for Freedom of Information Act (FOIA)-type requests.
A basic government website is intended to inform and educate the public, whereas a public portal enables user action and self-service opportunities. The most advanced public portals often include an AI agent or “chatbot” that can retrieve information, accept and route applications or requests for service, and provide updates and notifications to the user. A public portal that is natively integrated with the organization’s other data systems provides even greater speed, security, and value. These types of public portals can significantly reduce the number of phone calls, emails, and office walk-ins that government staff deal with during the day and improve customer service efficiency and satisfaction.
